Just like decorating any other room in your home, it’s the accessories that often make the statement. In the case of a dedicated home theater, this is almost a must. Since the screen and speakers won’t add much eye appeal to the room (unless of course a good movie is running), a home theater will need jazzing up beyond the main components.

Here are some things to consider when adding accessories to a home theater:

  • Theme – If you want to go with a theme, deciding this should be the very first thing that’s done. It will help guide the rest of your decisions from colors and wall hangings to furniture and lighting.
  • Purpose of the room – If the room is a dedicated home theater, the sky is pretty much the limit on decorating. If you want to go with a movie theme, you can do that. If you want Old World elegant with a big screen and speakers thrown in, that’s a go, too. Should the room have another purpose as well, that should be kept in mind while decorating. Most people wouldn’t want giant, framed movie posters for horror flicks within eyesight of their dining room. And if the room is also used for children’s play, safety considerations might dictate decorating.
  • Lighting – Make sure lighting enhances the movie experience. If the room is used for another purpose as well, consider a combination of lights to make it work for both instances. Low lighting is ideal for movies, but it’s not so hot for kids trying to do homework on a coffee table.
  • Colors – Choose colors that support your theme. If you’re going with a movie-oriented room that’s loaded with memorabilia, choose a color that will bring out the best in your wall hangings. If all else fails, neutral tones are always acceptable.
  • Furniture – Whether the room is meant for home theater use all the time or a living room too, comfort is key here. But remember that style and comfort can mix.
  • Wall hangings – Once again, find accessories that support your theme or at least your style. Have fun with your choices and go with things that you feel make the room “cooler” or “more inviting.”

How you choose to decorate your home theater can really make the room a showplace. Make it comfortable and a reflection of who you are and an ordinary home theater will become an extraordinary one.
